IC Information

Name: Duo Maxwell
Age: 17
Canon: Gundam Wing
Canon Point: Around the end of "Preventer 5"
Physical Description: Duo is a short and slender young man with a seriously long brunet braid and purple/blue eyes. He's rather pale from living in space for most of his life, and tends to dress in black with the occasional splash of red.
Link
Canon Abilities: Fully human, Duo has no supernatural abilities, but is highly skilled at theft, hacking (not that it'll do much good there), hand to hand combat (street fighting rather than martial arts), and blending in. He's a skilled mechanic explosives expert.
Possessions: Handgun and a few clips of ammunition, cell phone, lock picks, wallet with Preventer ID, a few pictures of friends, money, and probably some fake IDs. At least one small knife stashed in a boot, possibly two. A few spare hairbands in case his breaks. Some food wrapped up in plastic in a pocket, like a sandwich or the like.

Companion: N/A

Personality: On the outside, Duo is very friendly, fun loving, and a little goofy with his odd motto of "I'll run and hide but I'll never tell a lie." And really, he rather like that on the inside quite often too. But it all hides a darker side that's wracked with guilt and grief from his past. Even is name and the nickname of Shinigami are due to the many people he's known and had die. Duo for Solo, the boy he was closest to in their gang of kids when Duo was younger than eight. Solo died in a plague that went through their colony and to keep him with him, Duo named himself after him. Maxwell, he took from the Maxwell church, where the Father and Sister Helen took care of him and loved him until it was destroyed with everyone but Duo inside, leaving him the only survivor of the Maxwell Church Massacre. Shinigami, god of death, came from two parts. The first was his childhood decision that since he'd never seen any miracles but plenty of dead people, there must be no god other than the god of death. The other was that everyone who got close to him seemed to die.

Maybe it's because of this that he values those he can keep around so highly, even making friends and allies out of those who were at one point his enemy. When he and Heero met, Heero shot at him because they didn't know they were really on the same side of the war. When Heero was injured and captured, Duo broke him out of the military hospital. After which of course Heero stole some parts from Duo, but obviously forgave him for that after because later on they're close partners. We see it again with Hilde, who was a Alliance recruiter when she and Duo met, and he tells her to get out of the military and appears to be working with her at her scrap yard at the end of the series.

But that doesn't mean he's not able to kill. Duo is, after all, a gundam pilot, and none of them have clean hands. When we first see him, Duo's destroying a hanger full of enemy mobile suits, declaring that everyone who sees him has to die. Even though he does not want to kill and make the memory of Sister Helen sad, he's willing to be the one who does so no one else has to. But he does balk when there's a plan to drop the gundams on the earth shortly before the Gundam Wing series, trying to destroy Deathscythe and kill himself with it to keep that from happening. Instead, he's given the chance to 'steal' his gundam and find his own way to take down the Alliance. And when he sees Heero about to shoot Relena, he steps in to save her (thus Heero shooting at him).

As for the motto mentioned above, it's something he certainly seems to take to heart. Duo has no problem going underground and laying low when he needs to, hiding with Quatre's Maguanacs in the series until it's obvious that their being there is a threat to the local population who had so kindly welcomed them as heroes. And while he'll go undercover and deceive, and certainly has to do so quite a bit, he avoids lying outright.

He also carries a lot of guilt that he keeps buried. Survivor's guilt from the plague and the massacre, especially with the thought that maybe if he hadn't gone or had gotten back sooner, he might have saved them. Guilt over the murder of the pacifists, even though that was a trap laid on them by OZ planting misinformation. But that's a side that few get to see, even among those he calls friends. He'd much rather show them the bouncy goofy smile that might bring a smile to their face, or even earn a roll of the eyes if it makes them relax.

History: Link to Wiki
Note: With the debate on if Frozen Teardrop is canon considering its many inconsistencies and much, much later release date, I ignore it in my canon for Duo.
Notes2: Not listed in the wiki is the Preventer Five manga, in which we see Wufei gathering up the pilots again in 197 when terrorists hold Relena and many other high ranking people hostage. It cuts off before the mission ends, but we can assume the plan works and it's left up to readers whether or not any of the pilots other than Wufei stayed with the Preventers afterwards.

Sample:
Wherever he was, it was giving his cell phone fits as it flashed an angry 'no signal' message at him. The words weren't written in any different font than usual, but he could swear the thing was glaring at him. Blowing his bangs out of his face, Duo shoved the useless thing back into his pocket and looked around the freaky city he'd found himself in. Now, the former gundam pilot liked to think he had a high threshold for weird. Teenagers setting their own legs, sweet little blond kids running multi-million dollar companies, hell his own life story of poor little orphan boy saves the world. But the freaking winged cat that had been staring at him since he stopped to check his phone for coordinates just took the cake.

Duo pulled his eyes away from the cat, turning away from it to find someone who might have directions out of Wonderland city here. Spotting a man pushing a vendor car, he gave a wave. "Oi! Could you tell me which way to the nearest airport? I think I'm a bit lost." With a grin, he rubbed the back of his neck like he'd just been embarrassed to admit it.

"The nearest what?" the man asked, giving him a look like Duo's head wasn't on quite right. "Never heard of an airport, but the harbor's back that way."

"Right, right," Duo said with a laugh. Never heard of an airport? Yeesh, what kind of backwards place had he found himself in? "Thanks anyway!" As he headed down the way the man had pointed, he 'accidentally' bumped into a young couple buying food at another vendor, apologizing quickly as he turned the corner. A few more dodges across streets and he ducked into an ally, pulling out the 'borrowed' wallet to rummage for anything with a city name on it.

"...where the hell is Republic City?"
